18th CENTURY BENCH

Historic Conservation

Appropriately housed in a newly built Scottish style clubhouse, this 18th Century Wainscot bench suffered a mortal crack in the front rail.

Brought together by clamps the break was rejoined with traditional hot hide glue.

A made-to-fit clamping block was cut to ensure a good glue bond. The glue alone was not enough to hold permanently so a support rail was cut to fit and applied across break on the inside of the front rail itself.
